Information

Nilgun is a Professor (since 2000) of the Geological Engineering Department of the Middle East Technical University (METU). She received her B.Sc. (1979) and M.Sc. (1982) degrees in Geological Engineering from METU, and her Ph.D. (1987) in Isotope Geochemistry from the Department of Earth Sciences, University of Cambridge (U.K.) She is specialized in the fields of geochemistry and isotope geology. Nilgun has recently been acting as the coordinator of the research projects concerned with geochemical monitoring of geothermal fluids in relation to seismic activities along the North Anatolian Fault Zone (in collaboration with the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, USA) and the Eastern Segment of the Büyük Menderes Graben in western Anatolia (in collaboration with the GeoForschung Centrum, GFZ, Germany). Her particular areas of interest are helium, carbon, oxygen-hydrogen isotope systematics of crustal fluids, transport of mantle volatiles, the variations in fluid flux and isotope compositions in the stress regime associated with major fault systems, and the use of geochemical parameters as predictive tools of earthquake studies.
