Information

Reşat Ulusay is Professor in the Department of Geological Engineering at Hacettepe University and also Head of Applied Geology Division of this department. He took his MSc and PhD degrees in Geological Engineering and Engineering Geology, respectively, at Hacettepe University (1975), and PhD degree in Engineering Geology at the Middle East Technical University (1991).
He worked at the General Directorate of Mineral Research and Exploration Institute (MTA) between June 1975 and December 1995. Between June 1975 and March 1976 he was involved in a project as site engineer under the supervision of alien experts within the framework of uranium exploration supported by United Nations at western Turkey. After his military service completed in August 1977, he joined to a group to establish and develop the Rock and Soil Mechanics Division and Test Centre at the Feasibility Studies Department of MTA, under the auspices of United Nations Technical Cooperation Department. Between August 1977 and December 1995 he participated to a number of geotechnical projects mainly including slope stability, rock mass characterization, preliminary support selections for underground openings, site selection and rock and soil mechanics laboratory testing as engineer, project leader, head of division and deputy director of the department responsible from geotechnical studies. He has been a faculty member of Hacettepe University since December 1995.
His main fields of research and interest are: Engineering geology, rock mechanics and soil mechanics (particularly stability of slopes, rock mass characterization and classification, geotechnical site investigations, earthquake-associated soil liquefaction and ground behaviour, attenuation relationships, swelling, rock weathering, geomechanical laboratory testing). He was the member of National Earthquake Council between 2004 and 2007. He is currently the President of the Commission on Testing Methods of International Society for Rock Mechanics (ISRM) and the member of the Commission on Underground Rock Engineering Design Methods of ISRM, member of the International Geoscience Programme (IGCP) Scientific Board, and member of the Executive Committee of the International Association of Engineering Geology and the Environment (IAEG) Turkish National Group. In addition, he is the editor of three national journals on earth sciences, and associate editor and member of the editorial boards of four international journals on engineering geology and rock mechanics.
He has four books in Turkish and is the co-editor of an international book, and co-author of two chapters in an international book. In addition, he has 124 papers published in international journals and conference proceedings related to the above mentioned topics.
